Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments
You can request an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHC NA) as a young person over 16 years of age or your child has, or may have, special educational needs (SEN). It’s important to note that there must be an educational aspect involved; it cannot be solely about health or social care needs. According to the law, a child is considered to have a special educational need (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provision. For more information, please refer to our resources on EHC Needs Assessments, where we have further information on What is an EHC NA and a template letter to support your request.
Parents typically make a request for an EHCNA if their child is under 16 years old. However, young people over the age of 16 can submit the request themselves, either independently or with support from their parent or carer. If a young person is unable to understand, remember, or communicate their needs regarding educational support, their parent or carer may make the request on their behalf. You may also find it helpful to read IPSEA’s information on how the law applies to young people.
